Code of Ethics Violation It is not uncommon to find some type of corruption within law enforcement agencies if you dig deep enough. However, once discovered there must be a disciplinary measure that is taken to prevent further corruption. Ethical complaints can be filed by following the appropriate processes and procedures. Although policies vary from department to department, there is a specific code of ethics that each department functions by following. The Benton Harbor Police Department has received a lot of unwanted attention in the past few years. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Detroit Division, Bernard Hall Jr. was a sworn police officer working for the Narcotics Unit. He was responsible for supervising the†¦show more content†¦In 2009 Hall and Collins were indicted on charges of corruption related to many drug arrests from 2006 to 2008. What all did this involve? According to Herald Palladium, they used controlled drug buys to obtain illegal search warrants to em bezzle funds. Collins pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate civil rights and received the maximum statutory sentence of 37 months. Hall was represented by his attorney, Don Ferris of Ann Arbor, Michigan. He asked for a lighter sentence because Hall simply was a follower, not leading Collins. During the year of 2005, the narcotics department consisted only of Andrew Collins. It wasn’t until 2006 that Hall was transferred to the Narcotics Unit from the School Resource Officer position in June of 2006. During the time that Collins was testifying in court, he informed the judge that he had told Hall of his unethical activities and that he had been doing it to increase arrest numbers so he could do a better job. He would keep the drugs in his office to plant them on people during searches and to falsify drug buys to embezzle money. Upon further questioning by the Assistant U.S. Attorney, Brian Delany, he informed them that Hall knew about the drugs in his office and if he denie d it, he was blatantly lying about it. Captain Randel Pompey, the former Benton Harbor Police Captain was also called to testify about the claims.
